What do you need to know when deciding on an Executive coach?
Elite sportsmen are already superior performers. They engage coaches to ensure that they perform to the best of their ability.
It is just a given.
Yet how many executives and senior managers have an executive coach to ensure that they perform to the best of their ability? .
What is an Executive coach?
An executive coach is a business coach for superior performers. It is not an elitist privilege for senior executives, rather a business coach focused on performance and career success. It is practical, situationally focused and helps provide challenge and stretch.
An Executive Coach is not to be confused with life coaches or performance management experts.
As a HR Director
I have had Executive Coaches throughout my career.
I have trained to be an executive coach so I could have the knowledge to employ the best executive coaches for a leadership program I developed.
I have also practiced my executive coaching skill as an executive coach.
From this experience, I have developed an Executive Coaching Criteria to help professionals identify the best coaches for themselves or their organization.
Firstly, it is about business skills. They must have worked in and understand current business dynamics.
They do not need to understand the specific workings of a business function just how it operates within the system.
For example, they understand the role of the legal function however they don’t need to be a lawyer.
Secondly They must have superior people skills by having the ability to:
- Build rapport with the client by the first meeting.
- Be totally present with the client.
- Have exceptional listening skills.
- Ask probing and insightful questions.
Thirdly They have a robust progressive Executive Coaching toolkit.Which includes, business models, structures and experiences which they can use as appropriate.
Today more than ever people need to consider how they are going to future proof their career as everyone will be affected by the technological revolution in some form.
Ensuring Superior performance is one way of helping enabling this.
